Solution-Focused Therapy in Toronto & Ontario
.avif)
Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a forward-looking, strengths-based approach to psychotherapy that centres on where you want to go rather than dwelling on how you got here. Rather than spending sessions unpacking the origins of a problem in detail, SFT asks a more immediate question: what would your life look like without this problem, and what resources do you already have to help you get there? At Mantra Psychotherapy, we offer solution-focused virtual therapy to individuals across Toronto, the GTA, and Ontario as part of an integrative, client-centred approach to mental health care.
The People Behind Your Care
Our team comprised of experienced therapists who are prepared to support a range of psychological concerns and personal challenges.
What Is Solution-Focused Therapy & How Does It Work?
Solution-Focused Therapy was developed in the 1970s and 1980s by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg. Unlike traditional therapeutic models that invest significant time in understanding the root causes of a problem, SFT operates from the premise that you don't need a complete understanding of a problem's origins to begin resolving it. What matters most is identifying what a solution looks like and building a path toward it — drawing on the strengths, skills, and past successes you already possess.
One of the central techniques in SFT is the search for exceptions — times when the problem either didn't exist or had less of a hold on your life. By examining what was different during those periods, therapists and clients can identify the conditions, behaviours, and mindsets that supported wellbeing, and work to intentionally recreate them. This approach is both practical and affirming: it shifts the focus from what's broken to what's already working, even if only partially or occasionally.
What Does Solution-Focused Therapy Help With?
Solution-Focused Therapy is effective for a wide range of concerns and is particularly well-suited for people who feel ready to make changes and want a structured, goal-oriented approach to doing so. It is commonly used for anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions, low self-esteem, and work or career-related stress. Because of its forward-focused and non-pathologizing nature, it can also be especially valuable for individuals who have found traditional talk therapy felt too retrospective or slow-moving for their needs.
For 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and gay men, solution-focused approaches can be particularly affirming. Rather than centering a client's identity or history as the source of difficulty, SFT builds from a foundation of competence and resilience — qualities that queer people often develop in abundance through the specific challenges of navigating a world not always built for them. This strengths-based lens aligns naturally with affirming care, and we integrate it alongside other evidence-based approaches to meet the full complexity of our clients' experiences.
Research supports the effectiveness of solution-focused therapy across a range of presentations, with studies showing meaningful improvements in depression, anxiety, and overall wellbeing. A 2021 systematic review published in Frontiers in Psychology found significant positive effects of SFT on mental health outcomes, confirming its standing as a well-evidenced therapeutic approach. While SFT is often described as brief therapy, the number of sessions varies depending on your goals and needs — some clients benefit from a focused short-term engagement, while others integrate solution-focused techniques into longer-term therapeutic work.
Solution-Focused Therapy at Mantra Psychotherapy — What to Expect
At Mantra Psychotherapy, solution-focused therapy is one of several evidence-informed approaches our therapists draw on when building a treatment plan tailored to your specific goals. It is rarely used in isolation — most clients benefit from an integrative approach that combines SFT with other modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), depending on what fits best. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to determine which combination of approaches is most aligned with what you're working through.
All sessions at Mantra are conducted virtually through Jane App, a secure PHIPA-compliant telehealth platform, making solution-focused therapy accessible to clients across Toronto, the GTA, and all of Ontario. Virtual therapy removes the geographic and logistical barriers that often prevent people from getting started, and for many clients the flexibility of attending from home makes it easier to show up consistently and do meaningful work. Our therapists are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).
Beginning therapy with us starts with a free 15-minute consultation where you can share what's bringing you in, ask questions, and get a sense of whether the fit feels right. What to Expect When Starting Therapy
Final Session — Closing the Chapter
Endings in therapy are treated with the same care as everything else. Your last session is an opportunity to reflect on how far you've come, celebrate your growth, and make sure you feel equipped to carry what you've learned forward. The aim of the final session is to be a thoughtful, intentional close that honours the work you've done.
Sessions 3 & Beyond — Doing the Work
This is where the real momentum begins. With a strong therapeutic relationship in place, you and your therapist will start working more deeply — exploring patterns, building skills, and working toward the goals you've set together. Every person's journey looks different here, and your therapist will continuously adapt the approach to meet your evolving needs. Progress isn't always linear, and that's okay — this space is designed to hold all of it.
Sessions 1 & 2 — Getting to Know You
Your first sessions are all about building a foundation. Your therapist will take time to understand your history, your goals, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. You won't be pushed to dive into anything before you're ready. These sessions are about establishing trust, setting the tone, and making sure the direction of your work together feels right for you.
Your Initial Consultation — Free 15 Minute Call
This is a no-pressure conversation where you and the therapist get to know each other. You'll have the chance to share a little about what's bringing you to therapy, ask questions, and get a feel for whether you might be a good fit. There's no expectation to share everything — this is simply about making sure you feel comfortable before you begin.
