Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Toronto & Ontario
.avif)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an action-oriented form of psychotherapy that helps you stop fighting your inner experiences and start living a life guided by what truly matters to you. Our ACT therapists in Toronto don’t believe the goal of therapy is to delete "bad" thoughts or feelings. Instead, ACT focuses on changing your relationship with them so they no longer run your life.
The People Behind Your Care
Our team comprised of experienced therapists who are prepared to support a range of psychological concerns and personal challenges.
How ACT Works
ACT is built on the idea that suffering comes from psychological rigidity—getting stuck in our heads or trying to outrun our pain. Our ACT therapists use six core processes to help you build psychological flexibility:
- Acceptance (of Our Internal World): Instead of struggling against painful emotions or intrusive thoughts, we learn to make room for them.
- Cognitive Defusion: Creating distance between you and your thoughts, learning to see them as just words or pictures, rather than absolute truths that must be followed.
- Mindfulness (Being Present): Grounding yourself in the "now" rather than ruminating on the past or worrying about the future.
- Self-as-Context: Developing a sense of self that is separate from your temporary feelings or labels.
- Values Clarification: Identifying what’s important to you (e.g., authenticity, connection, creativity, etc.).
- Committed Action: Taking concrete steps toward those values, even when it feels difficult.
Is ACT Right for You?
ACT is grounded in the idea that we, as people, are already whole. By focusing on values-based living, we often stop waiting for the anxiety to disappear before we start living our lives. We start living it today, with the anxiety, until the anxiety no longer holds the wheel.
We understand that traditional therapy hasn't always been a safe or effective space for everyone. Mantra Psychotherapy integrates ACT with a deep commitment to affirming care, specifically tailored for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and those who identify as neurodivergent — including individuals with ADHD and those on the autism spectrum.
ACT tends to be a particularly good fit for people who have tried other approaches and found that trying harder to control or eliminate their thoughts and feelings only made things worse. If you've noticed that the more you fight your anxiety, the louder it gets — or the more you try to push away difficult emotions, the more they seem to dominate — ACT offers a fundamentally different way of relating to your inner experience. Rather than asking you to think more positively or challenge your thoughts, ACT invites you to change your relationship with those thoughts entirely.
It is also well-suited for people who feel disconnected from a sense of meaning or direction — those who are functioning on the surface but privately feel like they're going through the motions, or like the life they're living doesn't quite reflect who they actually are or what they actually value. For 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and gay men in particular, this experience of living at a distance from one's authentic self is often deeply familiar — and ACT's values-based framework offers a direct and affirming path toward further closing that gap.
ACT may be especially helpful if you are navigating anxiety, depression, chronic stress, burnout, perfectionism, people-pleasing, trauma, grief, identity-related concerns, or neurodivergent experiences that have made it difficult to engage fully with your life. It is not a one-size-fits-all approach — at Mantra Psychotherapy, your therapist will work collaboratively with you to determine whether ACT is the right fit, and how it can best be integrated into a treatment plan that reflects your specific goals and lived experience.

What to Expect When Starting Therapy
Final Session — Closing the Chapter
Endings in therapy are treated with the same care as everything else. Your last session is an opportunity to reflect on how far you've come, celebrate your growth, and make sure you feel equipped to carry what you've learned forward. The aim of the final session is to be a thoughtful, intentional close that honours the work you've done.
Sessions 3 & Beyond — Doing the Work
This is where the real momentum begins. With a strong therapeutic relationship in place, you and your therapist will start working more deeply — exploring patterns, building skills, and working toward the goals you've set together. Every person's journey looks different here, and your therapist will continuously adapt the approach to meet your evolving needs. Progress isn't always linear, and that's okay — this space is designed to hold all of it.
Sessions 1 & 2 — Getting to Know You
Your first sessions are all about building a foundation. Your therapist will take time to understand your history, your goals, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. You won't be pushed to dive into anything before you're ready. These sessions are about establishing trust, setting the tone, and making sure the direction of your work together feels right for you.
Your Initial Consultation — Free 15 Minute Call
This is a no-pressure conversation where you and the therapist get to know each other. You'll have the chance to share a little about what's bringing you to therapy, ask questions, and get a feel for whether you might be a good fit. There's no expectation to share everything — this is simply about making sure you feel comfortable before you begin.
