Relationship & Attachment Issues

Mantra Psychotherapy offers virtual relationship and attachment therapy in Toronto and across Ontario. Through individual (i.e., 1 on 1) therapy, our counsellors help you understand the patterns you bring into romantic, family, and friendship relationships, like pulling away when things get close, needing constant reassurance, or repeating the same conflict. Attachment patterns form early, but they can change. Therapy gives you space to understand yours and practise new ways of connecting.

Where Your Attachment Patterns Come From

Most of us learned how to relate to people long before we had language for it. If closeness felt unpredictable or conditional growing up, you may have learned to hold on tightly, or to keep people at arm’s length. These are attachment patterns, the habits your nervous system developed to stay connected and feel safe. They often show up as anxiety when a partner goes quiet, discomfort with too much closeness, or the same argument on repeat. In therapy, we trace where those patterns started and what they were protecting you from. Understanding them doesn’t mean blaming yourself or your family. It gives you a way to notice the pattern mid-moment and choose something different.

When Every Conversation Turns Into the Same Argument

Many couples and partners aren’t fighting about the dishes or the schedule. They’re caught in a cycle: one person pursues, the other withdraws, and both end up feeling unheard. Therapy helps you slow that cycle down and see what’s underneath it, whether that’s fear of rejection, a need for space, or feeling like you’re always the one reaching out. We work with individuals and couples, including LGBTQ2IA+ and non-monogamous relationships, and we don’t assume what your relationship should look like. You’ll learn practical ways to raise hard topics, repair after a rupture, and stay present when things get heated, so conflict becomes something you can get through together.

Struggling to Trust, Open Up, or Let Someone Close?

Wanting connection and feeling scared of it at the same time is common, and it usually has a history. Past betrayals, family instability, bullying, or years of hiding who you are can teach you that being fully known isn’t safe. For many LGBTQ2IA+ people, that history includes rejection or concealment, which can make vulnerability feel risky even in a good relationship. You might keep things casual, pull back when someone gets close, or feel anxious until you know where you stand. Therapy gives you a steady, non-judgmental place to practise trust at your own pace. We start with how you protect yourself now, then work toward closeness that doesn’t cost you your sense of self.

How One-on-One Therapy for Relationship and Attachment Issues Works

Your attachment style isn’t a life sentence. Patterns that formed in early relationships can shift through new experiences, and the therapy relationship is one of them. At Mantra Psychotherapy, our registered therapists draw on attachment-based therapy, DBT interpersonal skills, and other approaches, depending on what fits you. Early sessions focus on understanding how you relate to others and what you want to change. From there, you’ll practise new responses in session and in daily life. Sessions are 50 minutes for individuals and 75 for couples, held securely online. Most extended health insurance plans include coverage, and you can start with a free 15-minute consultation.

What to Expect When Starting Therapy

We believe the therapeutic journey should feel as comfortable as possible — here's what that looks like.

Final Session — Closing the Chapter

Endings in therapy are treated with the same care as everything else. Your last session is an opportunity to reflect on how far you've come, celebrate your growth, and make sure you feel equipped to carry what you've learned forward. The aim of the final session is to be a thoughtful, intentional close that honours the work you've done.

Sessions 3 & Beyond — Doing the Work

This is where the real momentum begins. With a strong therapeutic relationship in place, you and your therapist will start working more deeply — exploring patterns, building skills, and working toward the goals you've set together. Every person's journey looks different here, and your therapist will continuously adapt the approach to meet your evolving needs. Progress isn't always linear, and that's okay — this space is designed to hold all of it.

Sessions 1 & 2 — Getting to Know You

Your first sessions are all about building a foundation. Your therapist will take time to understand your history, your goals, and what you're hoping to get out of therapy. You won't be pushed to dive into anything before you're ready. These sessions are about establishing trust, setting the tone, and making sure the direction of your work together feels right for you.

Your Initial Consultation—Free 15 Minute Call

This is a no-pressure conversation where you and the therapist get to know each other. You'll have the chance to share a little about what's bringing you to therapy, ask questions, and get a feel for whether you might be a good fit. There's no expectation to share everything — this is simply about making sure you feel comfortable before you begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find the answers to frequently asked questions below.

What is attachment therapy, and how does it work?
Attachment therapy helps you understand the relationship patterns you developed early in life and how they show up in your adult relationships. Your therapist helps you notice habits like pulling away when someone gets close or needing constant reassurance, trace where they came from, and practise responding differently. This happens both in session and in daily life. At Mantra Psychotherapy, our registered therapists tailor the approach to you rather than following a fixed script.
Can my attachment style change?
Yes, attachment patterns can shift over time. They form through early relationships, but new experiences can reshape them, including a steady, trusting relationship with a therapist. Change tends to be gradual. You start by noticing your pattern as it happens, then try small, different responses, and over time the new response starts to feel more natural. Therapy supports that process, but it can’t promise a specific outcome or timeline.
How do I know if I have an anxious or avoidant attachment style?
Common signs are worrying when a partner is quiet or distant (anxious) or feeling uncomfortable when someone wants more closeness (avoidant). Many people recognize themselves in both, depending on the relationship. Attachment styles are a helpful framework, not a clinical diagnosis, and online quizzes can only point you in a direction. Your therapist can help you make sense of your patterns without needing you to fit a label.
How long does relationship and attachment therapy take?
There’s no set timeline, because it depends on what you want to change and how long the patterns have been in place. Some people come for a few months to work on a specific issue, like a recurring conflict or a hard breakup. Others stay longer to work through deeper patterns from earlier relationships. At Mantra Psychotherapy, you and your therapist check in regularly on whether the work is helping, and you can adjust the pace or wrap up when you’re ready. We can’t promise a specific outcome or number of sessions, but you can ask about your situation during a free 15-minute consultation.
Do you work with LGBTQ2IA+ and non-monogamous relationships?
Yes, Mantra Psychotherapy is an LGBTQ2IA-focused clinic, and we work with relationships of all structures, including queer couples and ethically non-monogamous partnerships. We don’t assume what your relationship should look like or measure it against a default model. Many of our therapists also have lived experience in the communities they serve, which can make it easier to talk about things like past rejection, hiding who you are, or how those experiences shape intimacy.
Do I need to be in a relationship to do this kind of therapy?
No, you don’t need a partner to benefit from relationship and attachment therapy. Many people come in single, dating, or recovering from a breakup because they keep running into the same patterns. Family relationships and friendships count too. Working on these patterns individually often changes how you approach every relationship in your life.
Should I come alone or with my partner?
Either can work, and the right choice depends on what you want to change. Individual sessions suit you if you want to understand your own patterns, history, and triggers. Couples sessions suit you if the difficulty is mainly in how the two of you communicate and handle conflict. Some people start individually and add couples work later. If you’re unsure, a free 15-minute consultation is a good way to talk through which fits best.
