A Little About Me

My name's Nick and I'm a Registered Psychotherapist. I take a trauma-informed, person-centred approach to psychotherapy. I have over 8 years of experience in the mental health, addictions, and social services fields. I believe that it's important to treat each person that I work with as an individual with unique needs and qualities. I approach therapy as a platform whereby an alliance between client and therapist is fostered, allowing the client to heal and grow while receiving guidance along the way. My areas of focus are LGBTQ2IA issues, anxiety, mood disorders, and trauma.

My Approach

Client-Centred Care

My approach is tailored to the client’s needs, values and identity. This approach has presumption that clients possess the capacity to identify solutions to their problems with the support of a therapist. A client-centred approach is highly collaborative and allows clients to choose their own direction in therapy and to identify what is most important for them to work on, with the support of their therapist.

Integrative Approach

I believe that one’s emotions, thoughts/beliefs, and behaviours are interconnected and should be addressed as a system. These three components are viewed in relation to one another and approached holistically. Through interventions that target maladaptive thoughts & beliefs, behaviours, and emotional wounds & reactions, I support my clients to reflect and become more in-tune with this system, leading to improved quality of life, better functioning, and increased sense of control.

Skills-Based Counselling

Supporting my clients to acquire skills for coping, self-care, relationships, communication, and self-discovery are key to how I work as a therapist. I deliver skills training in a variety of ways, including via handouts, worksheets, and practicing in sessions. Psychoeducation is provided to support clients in understanding themselves as they embark on their journey of self-discovery, healing, and personal growth.

My Areas of Focus

LGBTQ2IA-Specific Issues

We understand that many issues that individuals who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, asexual, 2-spirit, and intersex require a certain understanding of the cultural, socioeconomic, and identity factors that are relevant in therapy. Mantra Psychotherapy is prepared to provide LGBTQ2IA folks the type of treatment they may require and deserve. We may support you with issues like identity discovery, self-compassion,  the effects of marginalization, and navigating LGBTQ2IA+ relationships.

Anxiety

Anxiety has become more prevalent in recent years. Whether your anxiety presents as general worry, social aversion, panic, or otherwise, we are equipped and ready to support you. For individuals who have issues with anxiety, we may support you by helping you address distorted ways of thinking, providing you with skills to help you cope, and providing you with educational material that may help you better understand your symptoms. We will also work with you to help you regain a sense of control and management of your symptoms.

Self-Esteem

Self-esteem problems are experienced by many of us. At Mantra clinic, we take a compassionate and connection-focused approach that aims to help individuals feel accepted, understood, and heard. We may also support you by assisting you with a behavioural plan to create new habits in your life and by addressing and modifying negative patterns of thinking.

Trauma

It is an unfortunate reality that many individuals experience some form of trauma in their lives. Trauma can lead to depression, anxiety, somatic disturbances, and interpersonal issues. We will support you to understand your symptoms and formulate a unique treatment plan that fits your needs. This may take the form of in-session processing of traumatic experiences, self-care plan formulation, and/or psychoeducation around trauma and its effects. In any case, we will work with you to decide which course of treatment is best suited to your needs.
